A note on the ruling: scholars differ on whether zakat is due on jewellery kept for adornment and worn. This calculator only does the arithmetic and does not issue a ruling — please ask a scholar or a trusted fatwa authority in your country about your case.
How it is counted: 24K is treated as pure gold (1000/1000); the other karats at their standard commercial fineness: 22K = 916, 21K = 875, 18K = 750, 14K = 585. Value = pure grams × the price of a gram of 24K.
How zakat on gold is worked out
- Add up the weight of your gold for each karat separately.
- Turn each karat into pure gold: weight × fineness ÷ 1000. Example: 100 g of 21K = 87.5 g pure.
- Compare the total with the nisab: 85 g of pure gold.
- If it reaches the nisab and a lunar year has passed, zakat is 2.5% of its value at the price on the day you pay.
Questions
What is the nisab for gold?
The nisab is 85 grams of pure (24K) gold. If the pure gold you own reaches 85 g or more and a lunar year (hawl) has passed on it, zakat is due according to the majority of scholars.
How do I work out the pure gold in 21K or 18K?
Multiply the weight by the karat's fineness in parts per thousand: 21K = 875/1000, 18K = 750, 22K = 916. For example, 100 g of 21K = 87.5 g of pure gold.
How much is the zakat?
One fortieth — 2.5% of the value of the pure gold at the price on the day it is paid. Many scholars also allow paying it in gold: 2.5% of the pure gold weight.
