There is no VAT in the US — there is sales tax, which changes from state to state and city to city. ZahabFlow runs the gold, the stock and the books, and does not pretend to calculate sales tax.
Tax in the USA: no VAT, and sales tax outside the software
The US pack in ZahabFlow has no VAT. Sales tax follows thousands of local jurisdictions, and some states exempt bullion above a threshold.
Our decision is not to build sales-tax rules ourselves but to connect a specialist provider. That connection is not built yet, so today ZahabFlow does not calculate sales tax and the shop has to handle it outside the software.
A worked example
A 10 g ring at 18K, at an illustrative $120 per gram of pure gold, with a making charge of $20 per gram:

What every shop gets
A till priced from the rate of the moment
Price is never stored on a piece. It is rebuilt at every sale from the gram rate, fineness, making charge and tax, then fixed on the invoice.
Stock in grams per karat
Weight is stored in nanograms and fineness as parts per thousand, so pure grams add up and reconcile with no rounding.
Trade-in and buying scrap
The customer pays part of the price in old gold on the sell screen itself, and every gram that comes in is recorded with its cost and source.
Workshop
The customer’s gold on the bench is weighed going out and coming back, and the loss is recorded per craftsman.
Selling without internet
The arithmetic runs on the device itself; the sale waits in a queue, is sent when the connection returns, and the server re-prices it.
Day close
Expected grams per fineness and expected cash, against what you counted, with the difference recorded and a note.
Arabic and English
Arabic first, right to left, with full English — one tap to switch.

ZahabFlow stores fineness as parts per thousand, so 14K is 585. You enter its gram rate by hand if it is not one of the finenesses the live rate follows.
